the eruption of vesuvius
On August 24, 79 A.D. mount Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples erupted, burying the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. It is perhaps the most famous eruption of any volcano, not least because of Pliny the Younger's 'eyewitness' account given in letters he wrote to the historian Tacitus.
