The Department of Classics at Brown University, in conjunction with Dumbarton Oaks, has been authorized to announce a tenure-track position in the field of Byzantine literature and culture, with a strong interest in Late Antiquity, at the rank of Assistant Professor. For the first four years of this appointment, as Dumbarton Oaks Assistant Professor of Byzantine Studies, the successful candidate will spend half-time teaching at Brown and half-time in residence at Dumbarton Oaks (an affiliate of Harvard University, located in Washington, D.C.) as a research associate with some institutional duties. Evidence and promise of success both in college-level teaching and in research are prerequisites for this position; preference will be given to candidates who can also teach courses in Classical Greek. The Ph.D. must be completed before July 1, 2005, the starting date of this appointment. Candidates must submit a letter of application, a C.V., three letters of recommendation, and a sample of scholarly writing.
