Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canucks!!!! A rather slow week, otherwise ... ================================================================ Monday, October 13 ================================================================ 4.00 p.m. |DCIVC| Rome: Power and Glory: The Rise dna
8.00 p.m. |DCIVC| Tomb Of The Warrior Prince dna [but I believe it's about a Scythian burial]
8.00 p.m. |HINT|Kings and Beasts "For over 600 years, England's Kings and Queens held lions and tigers and bears, as well as other wild beasts, captive in the Tower of London. Enter the lions' den as we excavate the Royal Menagerie, Britain's longest-running zoo." ================================================================ Tuesday, October 14 ================================================================ 5.30 a.m. |HISTC|History Bites: Spartans, Get Ready to Rumble "The Battle of Thermopylae may well be the most lopsided confrontation in history. Tens of thousands of Persians against 300 Spartans! Who will win? The answer may not surprise you. "
7.00 p.m. |HINT| The Ten Commandments "Originally, the Ten Commandments didn't mean the same things as they do today. How was adultery different in the ancient world? And what did it mean to honor your father and mother? We'll study these intriguing questions and more."
8.00 p.m. |PBS| Lost Roman Treasure "At the height of the Roman Empire, an opulent city stood at the eastern frontier on the most important crossing of the Euphrates River. Called Zeugma ("junction") after the bridge that linked its opposite banks, the city disappeared into history after the empire fell. Now its remains are about to disappear beneath a mammoth reservoir. NOVA records the frantic scramble to recover the glory that was Zeugma. Buried by centuries of silt and dirt, Zeugma was long neglected by archaeologists, until the rising edifice of a nearby hydroelectric dam forced them to act quickly before the site was flooded."
8.00 p.m. |DCIVC| Mummies: The Real Story dna
9.00 p.m. |HISTC|Timewatch: Roman Soldiers To Be "Eight ordinary members of the public have the chance to dress, work, eat and live as Roman recruits for six days."
You've seen Gladiator and Ben Hur, but you've never seen Roman soldiers getting down to the nitty gritty--digging ditches, cooking over an open fire, using the three-seater latrine--all in the cold and wet of a British November.
In a compelling mix of down-to-earth observation and historical insight, Dr Kate Gilliver of Cardiff University sees her dream come true as the Roman army comes to life for a week. Dr. Gilliver explains, "We learn next to nothing about the experiences of ordinary soldiers from the ancient texts so this has been a very valuable experience in terms of expanding my ideas and understanding of the Roman army."
11.00 p.m. |HINT|The Odyssey of Troy "What is it about the legendary city that 3,200 years after its fall, we still try to unravel Troy's mysteries? Scholars attempt to answer the question by researching the Greek poet Homer, possibly one of the greatest poets in Western Europe's history, and his epic tale of love and war, and comparing his text to archaeological sites." ================================================================ Wednesday, October 15 ================================================================ 4.00 p.m. |DCIVC| Byzantium: Forever and Ever dna

9.00 p.m. |HINT| Time Team: Wadden, Dorset "When Time Team descended on Wadden in Dorset, England, they outnumbered residents--the village consists of 5 houses. They were invited by neighbors David James and Grace Brooks, who found a huge amount of old pottery in their shared garden during excavations for a septic tank. The pottery dated from Medieval, Roman, and Iron Age days. The name Wadden derives from Wode Hill and dates back a 1,000 years, but what lies beneath the handful of houses that remain? Time Team has 3 days to find out."
10.00 p.m. |DISCU| Joseph & The Coat of Many Colors "At a time when Semites and Egyptians were the harshest of enemies, Joseph became a Pharaoh's trusted minister. Using the tools of modern forensics, scholars trace Joseph's path from favored son of Abraham to slave and government official."
10.00 p.m. |HINT| Time Team: Basing, Hampshire "Throughout the 16th century, the Paulet family played a key role in affairs of the English state. Here, in its heyday, the grand house played host to both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I--Mary I and Philip II honeymooned in Basing House. But the Paulets were Catholics and backed Charles I in the English Civil War. Cromwell led a force of 7,000 men to capture the house and destroy the stronghold. Join Time Team in their investigations at Basing House, which prove both exciting and frustrating." ================================================================ Thursday, October 16 ================================================================ 1.00 p.m. |DCIVC| The Great Egyptians 11: The Queen who would be King dna

Who built the prehistoric stone circle? Druids? Merlin the Magician? Was it an altar for human sacrifice or landing pad for UFOs? Experts, anthropologists, and astronomers assess the mystery. "
9:00 p.m. |DTC|Secrets of the Colosseum "Visit the ruins of this massive triumph of Roman building and engineering for clues to its ingenious design. Built in a remarkably short span of 10 years, the structure combined travertine stone, iron, concrete, brick and lava rocks from nearby Vesuvius."
9.00 p.m. |HINT|England's Great Wall "Stretching roughly 80 miles across northern England, Hadrian's Wall split the country in two, serving as a barrier against Pict marauders. Did the Roman army build the wall to protect their new province, or as some historians argue, to build-up the phenomenal ego of Emperor Hadrian, which was nearly as big as the wall itself? "
10.00 p.m. |DTC| The Crusades "Christians had held the town of Acre for over 100 years. But on May 18, 1291, Muslim Saracens besieged the city and won a decisive victory. An Israeli archaeologist excavates the ruins to reveal the interest forces have shown in this area for centuries."
11.00 p.m. |DTC| The Great Plague "Hundreds of years ago, London was struck with a deadly disease called the Great Plague. Over one spring and summer 100,000 people died. That fall the plague vanished as quickly as it appeared, but after an extended dormancy, the plague is back in the US." ================================================================ Saturday, October 18 ================================================================ 10.00 a.m. |DCIVC| Ancient Warriors: The Assyrians-Masters of War dna
