SPECIAL AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT: Based on the AIA's audio visual policy
which does not provide funds to support LCD digital projection
equipment, there have been some requests for the costs associated
with renting such equipment for your presentation at the Annual
Meeting.  We are currently evaluating the volume of requests and
relative costs. The discounted rental cost will be dependent on the
size of the room/screen size, and volume discounts that will be
ultimately negotiated with the AV providers.  I will be in touch with
those who have indicated an interest in LCD equipment to discuss the
expense, and we will continue to work hard to provide the lowest
possible cost.

Thank you for your participation in the AIA Annual Meeting.  Please
do not hesitate to contact me at 617-353-8704 or jmoen@aia.bu.edu
with any further questions or comments!  I look forward to seeing you
all in San Francisco, California!

Many apologies for any cross-posting.

This international conference aims to bring together, for the first time
a gathering of classicists, ancient historians, medical historians,

explore our understanding of the body in ancient medicine and
philosophy. The conference will look at all aspects of anatomy and
anatomical knowledge from prehistory to late antiquity, with special
reference to the Classical World (and its predecessors), Europe, Egypt,
the Near East, the Indian Sub-Continent and China.

The multi-disciplinary programme will include papers (or posters) on the
following general themes:

       Anatomy and disease
Anatomy and the philosophy of the body
       Anatomy and medical practice
       Anatomy and gender
       Anatomy and medical education
       Anatomy in ancient art
       Anatomy and Sport

The conference will be held in the University’s Conference Park, located
nearby the main campus and the Medical School. It will be accompanied by
a social programme, reflecting the multi-ethnic culture of Birmingham,
together with a conference dinner. The languages of the conference will
be English, French and German.

The Society for Ancient Medicine (SAM) is dedicated to fostering
scholarly work on all areas of ancient medicine, including its impact on
later traditions. It regularly holds a panel at the APA/AIA Annual
Meeting in the USA and SAM members contribute to the Ancient Medicine
Newsletter/Bulletin de Médecine Ancienne, with its on-line bibliography
at http://www.bium.univ-paris5.fr/amn. This is the first of a series of

CFP: Ancient theories on the physical and cognitive development of the
fetus

At the Boston meeting of the American Philological Association, January
2005, the Society for Ancient Medicine will sponsor a panel session
featuring recent research on ideas about the development of the fetus in
all periods of antiquity.  We are interested in papers treating both the
physical and cognitive growth of the fetus as well as any directives on
how to care for a pregnant woman or on methods of abortion that indicate
beliefs about its development.

If apropos, modern analysis and critical examination of ancient methods
are welcome. Please send a summary of your paper (between 500-750 words)
to arrive by 1 February 2004 and address it to: Professor Lesley
Dean-Jones, Univ. of Texas, Austin, Dept. of Classics, 1 University

<http://www.apaclassics.org/> (though details are not yet online).  For
