The Image as Boundary - an international conference

University College, Durham, 9th and 10th July 2007

‘The Image as Boundary’ conference will provide a forum for discussion between scholars of ancient images at all levels of their career. It will provide an environment for a number of scholars working on diverse fields to consider their work on images within a wider context.

The conference will explore the ways in which images could be seen as important boundaries in antiquity. It will discuss recent research on the image as a physical object in the ancient world, and literary constructions of images. Papers address the social, cultural, and religious space occupied by images in antiquity; the form and function of human relationships with images; ancient discourses on the boundaries of and/or occupied by images; and the life of images.
