CALL FOR PAPERS

The Department of Classics of the Radboud
University Nijmegen, the Programme in Ancient
History of Utrecht University and OIKOS (the
Dutch Research School in Classical Studies)
invite all classicists, historians and students
of oral culture to submit an application for the
Eighth Biennial Conference on Orality and
Literacy in the Ancient World, to take place in
Nijmegen, the Netherlands, from 2 to 6 July,
2008.

This conference will follow the same format as
the previous seven conferences held at Hobart,
Tasmania (1994), Durban (1996), Wellington
(1998), Columbia, Missouri (2000), Melbourne
(2002), Winnipeg (2004), and Auckland (2006) and
it is planned that the refereed proceedings will
once again be published by E.J. Brill as Volume 8
in the Orality and Literacy in the Ancient World
series.

The theme for the conference is Orality, Literacy
and Religion and papers in response to this topic
are solicited: we are thinking in particular of
(30 min.) papers that a) discuss the use of oral
performances or of written texts in Greco-Roman
religions, or b) deal with the representation of
the divine in Greek and Latin literature. There
will be a special section on Sacred Laws. Papers
will be anonymously refereed and selected on the
basis of their abstracts.
