School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Exeter
University, is one of the largest in the UK, with fifteen
permanent staff members, whose interests cover the history,
literature, language and material culture of the Classical
World. The Department achieved 5A in RAE 2001 and has an
outstanding recent research record. There is a strong
postgraduate contingent of around 20 full-time PhD
students, and an annual intake of 15-20 for the MA in
Classics and Ancient History. The department offers degree
programmes in Classics, Classical Studies, Ancient History
and numerous combined programmes, with an A-level entry
requirement of AAB/ABB. Since 2001 the department has
received a major annual grant from the Leverhulme
Foundation to develop study, research and teaching in the
history, literature and culture of the Hellenistic and
Graeco-Roman periods, and this has shaped its recent
development, including the creation of an Exeter Research
Centre for Hellenistic and East Roman Culture. There are
developing inter-disciplinary links with the rest of the
school, including the Institute for Arab and Islamic
Studies.
Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor in
Hellenistic and Graeco-Roman Literature and Culture (Ref

The department plans to make a new appointment in the field
of Hellenistic and/or Graeco-Roman Literature and Culture,
at an appropriate level between Lecturer and Associate
Professor, tenable from September 2007. Candidates should
have a strong track-record in research, and will be
expected to teach later Greek literature at BA and MA
level, and contribute to postgraduate supervision.

The department plans to make a new appointment in the field
of Hellenistic and/or Graeco-Roman Literature and Culture,
at an appropriate level between Lecturer and Associate
Professor, tenable from September 2007. Applicants will be
considered from any field of Latin, but preference in
making this appointment may be given to candidates with
research interests in Latin literature, and the successful
candidate will be expected to teach and supervise
undergraduate and postgraduate students Latin language and
literature at all levels. This post has previously been
advertised at lecturer level with a closing date of 9
February. This renewed advertisement invites applications
from candidates eligible for appointment at more senior
levels up to Associate Professor and the closing date has
been extended to 2 March. Short-listing will take place on
8 March and presentations and interviews are scheduled for
